Fly Fishing in Europe - Top 5 The hidden treasures

Top 5 hidden places for fly fishing in Europe

1.  Norway

It’s no secret that you get top conditions for freshwater fishing and fly fishing in Norway. You are spoilt for choice with secluded clear lakes, rivers, and streams.
There’s an abundance of freshwater fishing spots in the forests, mountains, and national parks – in fact, pretty much all over the country. Compared to many other countries in Europe, Norway is exceptionally clean with fresh air, clear water, and lots of happy fish. And if you’re after peace and quiet and love spending time outdoors, you won’t have a hard time with finding a place all to yourself. Just remember that you will need a fishing license.

Those hooked on fly fishing will be pleased to hear that Norway’s cold water lakes are chock-a-block with brown trout, pike, and perch. Other common species are grayling, common whitefish, and Arctic char. Salmon fishing is a chapter for itself. And thanks to the cold climate, Norway has also established itself as a premier destination for ice fishing in Europe. So grab your fishing rod and go!

A Norwegian fishing adventure is a good option if you’re on a budget. Renting a characteristic wooden cabin can offer great value for money – especially if you get together with a few friends, as they are often priced per cabin rather than per person. Many cabins have self-catering facilities, so you don’t have to eat out all the time. Instead, take the opportunity to refine your cooking skills and turn your catch into a feast.

2. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Many foreign fly fishermen could simply not believe that Bosnia and Herzegovina provides with excellent fly fishing opportunities, well maintained gin clear waters full of fish, excellent catches, and all at a very modest price. However, after they had their chance to visit our rivers, most of them come back. Regardless if you want to fish small streams, medium and large size rivers, Bosnia provides you with excellent fly fishing opportunities, mainly for wild fish. You can expect to catch huge grayling, beautiful trophy size brown trout, large rainbows and of course, the biggest attraction to all fly fishermen, the Danube Salmon (HUCHO HUCHO).

3. Romania

One particularly interesting thing to find out about Romania, especially when talking to fly fishers, is that Romania has 66.000 km of rivers, whereas almost 20.000 km are mountain ones and over 16.600 km are rivers, where wild salmonides are masters of disguise. Beautiful mountain rivers! Rivers that cut their way through massive limestone formations, through hard granite, or dark tuff; rivers that are crystal clear, or milky, tempting fans of either gin or cognac water colours to try them out and catch some brownies, or their other gorgeous relatives, the brook trout, the rainbow trout, the huchen and the grayling. There are also 162 lakes, with a total surface of more than 9.600 km² where the brown trout and the lake trout challenge the hunter in you. There are also almost twice as many cyprinid waters, with more than 28.300 km of rivers and 1.710 km² of lakes. The fish which follow your lures in these waters are mainly chub, perch, barbel and carp, competing with the rapid, eager pikes.

4. Soca River, Slovenia

When you stay with us in the Soca valley, you will be surrounded by the peaks of the Julian Alps. A place of enchanting beauty. With our guidance, you can experience the very best fly fishing on some of Europe’s most beautiful pristine and gin clear rivers. Fishing for the unique marble trout – often of double figures, record Soca grayling, and brown, brook and rainbow trout..

In Slovenia there is an abundance of fishing. We work hand in hand with the Fishing Associations to take you to the best fishing locations. Fishing in Slovenia is well preserved and the environment’s well-being is of great importance.

The country is largely forested with many varieties of deciduous trees on the hillsides. There is very little heavy agriculture, creating the perfect natural habitat for wildlife, with copious varieties of butterflies and birds, and a profusion of wildflowers. This in turn all helps with the prolific insect hatches that create some of the most spectacular fishing in Europe. Slovenia’s fauna and flora have to be seen to be believed!

This beautiful country nestles between Italy and Austria, and is truly worth a visit for the discerning fly fisher.
